Subtract layout

For this project I looked up the definition of subtract: Latin subtractus, to draw from beneath. This made me think of drawing strength from within and the Japanese view of the koy fish.
This is just a preliminary post for the layout. I would still like to edit a few things and finish this layout as a painting, Otherwise I liked the idea of creating it as a tattoo vs the original attempt.

subtract #2

Subtract!

Needs a little bit more work before Thursday for sure. Especially with the lighting and facial details.

The idea was removing someone from your memories. Or subtracting them from existence.
Brilliant?

Brilliant.

Subtract

For this project I looked up the definition of subtract: Latin subtractus, past participle of subtrahere to draw from beneath. This made me think of drawing strength from within and the japanese culture view of the koy fish, the lore that it has great strength and perseverance from within. With this I tried to recreate the feeling of  japanese woodcut paintings.

SUBTRACT- BOB MARLEY

i originally wanted to do Bob Marley for the topic "Legendary", but of course i didn't finish on time....

since i started him, i wanted to continue and found a way to use him for the subject "subtract".

if you subtract the TRUE colors of a painting, you begin to look at it differently. shadows and highlights begin to pop out and you begin to see colors you wouldn't normally see. i used jamaican colors; bright, bold, and fun!

Sequence paintings

I spent my extra time this week trying to finish my sequence paintings. Didn't quite do it but got further along.

Illustration Friday - Subtract

The first thing that sprang to mind with the word "subtract" was elementary school, so I ran with it. This is actually a loose interpretation of my 5th grade teacher, even though we were doing far more advanced math in 5th grade than basic arithmetic. I think it's pretty straight-forward :)

Swirls

This was for the Illustration Friday post Subtract. I'm not quite sure if this feels finished to me or not, but I can't think of anything else to add to it. I wanted a more spacey, open piece for the theme, and abstract art is something I've never tried before.

New Illustration Friday Topic

So, for all of you that didn't do "Legendary" please do the new word:

"Subtract"

Please bring in your finished pieces on Tuesday.

If you did Legendary and want to try Subtract, I will give extra credit.

Good work so far.

Hi to folks from Illustration Friday! This blog is work from various students at Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Center for New Media, feel free to browse around! Lots of neat stuff. If you're interested in some more of my work, you can check out my personal blog, Drawing on Walls.

Thanks for stopping by!

Illustration Friday Assignment!

Just as a reminder, the Illustration Friday deadline for "legendary" is tonight. So please post your pieces for that word today sometime and put it up on Illustration Friday as well.

For those of you who choose the other option. Please look up the word on IllustrationFriday.com starting Friday, and bring that finished illustration to class on Tuesday.

If you are interested in doing both words, turning in two of them will get you extra credit. The second one will be worth up to 15 points. (The assignments we do in class are worth 20-30 points.)

Good luck!

Illustration Friday - Who is Mysterion??!

I decided to paint South Park's latest legendary hero, Mysterion, after watching it earlier. I realize this is a quick one, I only began it a few hours ago so I may do one for this week as well...depending on the word. :) I did a sketch of the character and did the rest in Painter.

Illustration Friday Assignment: Legendary

Well, here it is. The first thing I thought of (oddly enough) when thinking of the word "Legendary" was the legendary Hunt of the Unicorn, where hunters pursue unicorns through the woods with their hounds biting at the poor creatures heels- all because of its one horn, which was said to be able to detect poison when made into a cup... And heal too, I think. Don't take my word on the last bit. XD
After doing some sketches- some of which were kind of disturbing o.O... i.e. dead unicorns in pools of their own blood... I somehow ended up with this. XD (Which is pretty much just as disturbing.)

I think I'm going to call it... "Broken Soul"... or maybe "Betrayal".
Though "Betrayal" sounds more mysterious... and a lot less cliche than "Broken Soul". XD

Sequence project: Revised/Finished/Despised

Jonas here. NM figured it out. This work I've done just takes me back to 5th grade...quality.

Series assignment

I decided to take the advice with a paper bag effect for the background. I think it looks better than the previous attempt. I also added the blue butterflies. I like the affect it adds, but I'm not sure if I like how I painted them. I may go back and edit them again.
